240GB Hard Drive Upgrade for iPod Video 5G!

Post by RapidRepair » February 9th, 2009, 5:57 pm

Rapid Repair unveils the world's first 240GB iPod!!!

240GB Toshiba MK2431GAH Hard Drive is the Largest 1.8' Drive to Date
Lets See What we Can Get This Bad Boy to Work in!

KALAMAZOO, MI (2/2/09) – Rapid Repair has just finished testing the largest 1.8 inch drive available to date. The Toshiba MK2431GAH 240GB single platter drive can hold a bit more music than you may be used to. This 8mm dual platter drive came from the MK1231GAL package released in 2008 when the iPod Classic 2nd Gen. 120GB came out from Apple. Unfortunately this drive is only compatible with the original iPod Video versions. It will work in a 30GB, 60GB and 80GB original iPod Video ONLY. Initial compatibility tests indicate functionality only on the iPod Video 5G, but we are working to develop a method to enable use on iPod Classic, and Zune 2G units. Cram as much music as you can on this HUGE drive! Price is yet to be announced, we should start seeing stock in a few weeks. Check the product here for your iPod repair and upgrade needs: http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/3119-ha ... 31gah.html

I have purchased one of these on the pre-order. I got it in the mail about a week ago. I did the self install and was done in under an hour I expect. I am pretty sure I was taking it very slow. It works great I will have to say. I also figured since rockbox works on the 5G iPods I would play with that. I had to enable LBA48 at compile time, add support for 4096 sector drives and recompile rockbox and the boot loader to get it working. After playing with it I found there was a 32768 limit on the amount of files rockbox could index (the default iPod firmware does not seem to have this issue, at least on the 80gb 5.5G which has 64mb of ram). After some discussion with the rockbox developers I was able to put together a patch that fixed this limit. We are still doing some testing to see if it get put into a future release. But rockbox and the reg firmware both work great now on this drive. If you have a HUGE library I can't recommend it enough, I have about 38k songs on mine. I if anyone needs more info on running rockbox on one let me know. To my knowledge I am the only one to try so far. :)

It is great to hear that so many people are interested in the hard drive upgrade. Here is a little background information on the drive: it can hold up to 60,000 songs, 300 hours of video, and 50,000 photos and is 33% more energy efficient than other hard drives. The cost of the drive is $294.99 and we offer free installation on the drive for now. The drive is compatible in the 5th Generation (and 5.5G) models with hard drives 30GB, 60GB, or 80GB. Typical turnaround time on this upgrade right now is 1-2 days after receiving your unit. If you are upgrading from a 'small' (30GB video) you will need to upgrade your back panel and the battery. Our batteries are 'extended life batteries' and they have been found toaddabout 1-2 hours of additional playtime off a normal charge. You can find more information http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/3119-ha ... 31gah.html Hope this helps!

what's bothering me is no one is willing to give me an actual number. Is it less then 20hrs rated with stock drive in an ipod 5/5.5G. How about some real world numbers? If I get a another battery will the ipod last 22 hours with the 240gb drive?

That's because we don't have an actual number for you. The 5th Generation iPod is rated at 20 hours with the 80GB HD and original OEM battery. Our battery pushes that to 22+ hours. The 240GB drive is a new drive, and it hasn't been used in the iPod before, so it has not actually been rated yet. The 240GB drive specs from Toshiba indicate the drive uses slightly less power than other drives Toshiba offers like the 80GB, so I assume the rating is going to be almost exactly the same if not slightly higher. Hope that helps!

Kudos for creating a 240GB iPod! I started my mp3 collection in 2001 and this is the first time the iPod capacity has outgrown my collection (190GB at the moment). Unfortunately I live in Europe and ordering this drive in the USA + shipping + tax makes it a very expensive upgrade. If I'm able to find the Toshiba MK2431GAH drive here locally, could I do the upgrade myself? I already replaced a broken iPod screen, so I'm not worried about the repair part. I'd just like to know if any MK2431GAH will work in a 5th Generation iPod, or some special modifications are needed to make the drive work.

Greetings! I was thinking of upgrading my iPod to the 240g and had a few questions.

1) Will I need to replace my existing battery in order to run the new 240g properly?
2) If I am using the 5th gen 30g iPod video U2 edition will the hard drive fit?
3) If I order the hard drive with padded backing will you guys stick on or will I need to DIY? Which size padding will you recommend thick or thin?

Thank you!

I have a 120gb ipod classic board in a 160gb chassis. Will this drive work as a 120gb drive at least until updated firmware is available?

I plugged in this 240gb drive to my 120gb iPod Classic motherboard, and the drive shows up as 128gb. If the classic 120gb were only seeing a single platter, it should show 120gb, not 128. Actually, it should show less than that since the 240gb is the 1 billion byte capacity rating, actually 223.9 GB in base-2 numbers. By that logic, the classic is detecting the drive as 137 billion bytes, so only just over 100gb less than what the drive actually is.

So it looks like the problem is that the drive geometry is not detected correctly, not that the double platters. Actually I know for a fact that the Classic 120gb can take a double platter drive since this was to be an upgrade to the 160gb drive that is in my classic now, which works fine with the 120gb motherboard (sort of a frankenPod 160gb with Genius) and is able to use the full 160gb capacity (148.8gb useable)

Also I wanted to report that an external USB enclosure I have was able to use the 240gb drive. I don't have much info for the enclosure other than to say it is a slim silver enclosure with a "WLXKJ186" printed on the back and the chip inside says:
PL-2506C
LFO07113B
T72589-900

I was also able to access the drive on a desktop computer using a ZIF to 2.5" adapter and a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE cable. In that case, there are no chips or anything; the cables just adapt the pins to the larger connector and the computer accesses the drive natively.

So will the 240 drive work in a 6th generation 120 Classic? Thanks, Travis.

Why are you guys giving this poster a hard time for his question?
Apple calls their 6th gen ipod the "Classic" .. do not confuse this with the original black and white screen one. It stands to reason that the 240GB drive would work with the 6th gen ipod, if it worked with the 5th gen, doesn't it? It is not a silly question.

Having said all that, has anyone tested the newer 320GB 1.8" drive from Toshiba in an ipod yet?

Considering the fact that the iPod firmware can barely keep up with a filled 240GB drive, it would be a pure academic exercise unless you plan to load it with full length movies.

I have an IPOD 30G, model ma002ll.
I want to upgrade to the 240G drive.
a) will the upgrade work
b) do I need a new back?? (can I measure the back somehow)

The 240GB HD will work for iPod Video (5th of 5.5th Gen) that originally had 60GB or higher. You also need to follow the following tips:

To properly sync more than 30,000 songs on your 240GB iPod, they must be grouped. You should group your music library in one or more playlists of 30,000 songs or less each, then load the lists onto the iPod. For help with playlists check out,

how to create a playlist (http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/#video-playlists).

If you have properly loaded more than 30,000 songs, they will all play. However, hitting “shuffle songs” from the main music menu won’t work properly since it would create an active list of more than 30,000. You can still shuffle an entire playlist of up to 30,000 songs.

Oh and yes, it does require the "thick" back panel. Hope that answers your questions!

Stop using iTunes. Almost all iTunes replacements support what you want.
