Although it was marketed as a
portable digital audio player that also plays video, the Apple iPod
Fifth Generation (with Video) was Apple's first entrant into the
nacent portable video market. It uses a 20GB, 30GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB,
100GB or 240GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of supporting "up to"
6,000 songs, 7,500 songs, 10,000 songs, 15,000 songs, 20,000 or "up to" 25,000
songs in "128-Kbps AAC format". Additionally, Apple reports that the
30 and 60 GB drives, respectively, can hold "over 1000" or "2000" 4
minute videos in "H.264 750-Kbps video with 128-Kbps audio". Both
capacities use a case with either an "iBook white" or "jet black"
front and a chromed stainless steel back -- 31% or 12% thinner, 30,
40 and 60, 80, 100 GB models respectively, than the previous
full-sized iPod models -- and have a "2.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA
transflective over 260,000 color LCD display" (320x240, .156-mm dot
pitch) with a "white LED" backlight that is both larger and
higher-resolution than earlier iPod models. 240Gb holds a hell of a lot of music & data.
The iPod Video 5G can immediately display many types of photos transferred
directly from a digital camera using the iPod Camera Connector, and can display photo slide shows on the internal display
or a television using AV cable (S-video, data and audio output, and
a variable line output port are provided by the optional Universal
Dock that also provides support for the Apple Remote. Unlike earlier iPod models, it also supports video playback
on the internal display or on a television (at a maximum resolution
of 480x480).
