Broken zune, can i use hard drive?

Postby Milhouse6669 » January 6th, 2008, 4:01 pm

i have an old Zune 30 that i failed at opening trying to replace a broken LCD screen so now my zune is basically just parts, are there any sort of connectors or any way to use this 30gb hard drive as an external drive of any sort?

Also i have a mainboard for zune that might be in working condition, just dont know what to do with it, and not 100% sure if it works

if you search froogle.google.com for 1.8 inch drive enclosure you'll find them for toshiba, and also ebay has them for pretty good prices

based on what i read, yes im about to order one, and i can tell you for sure if you're skeptical but based on what i read there's a hitachi and toshiba 1.8 enclosures, more intended for hacking such as putting linux on, and the toshiba works for zune drive, but i can tell you waht i get if you want to wait

yeah that's what i'm looking at. but i might sell my broken zune. they're going for around 50bucks on ebay, especially with all the accessories. a broken screen is a major drawback, but my screen is fine. i'll see wat happens, but thanks for the info! :D

yeah, if only i knew whether my mainboard is good or not, i can't tell and i'm not sure whether rapid repair would test it for free, i could look into it, and if its fine sell it?

Go to onto ebay and search for "zune as is" and you'll see all the broken zunes that people are selling. Most don't say what the problem is, just that it doens't turn on, and they're still going for around $50 (unless of course the screen is broken). and yes, i think rapidrepair tests for free, then they tell u how much it will cost to fix. u can choose to have them send it back if u want after that, u only pay for shipping.

oh yeah....i forgot that the original reason u opened it was to replace the lcd screen! i guess ur out of luck then...if the hard drive is ok, u can sell it on ebay too. they're going for around 30 if u get lucky, but if u wanted to keep the hard drive and use it for storage, that's pretty cool too :D an external 30 gig hd would be awesome with my laptop. but i really need money for a new zune....i'll probably sell my broken one...well we'll see what happens, good luck!

Well, i got everything today, it looks like it would work, if the pins werent so spread apart, its hard to count on the hard drive, they look like the same number but the pins for the enclosure are about 1/4inch wider than the terminal on the HDD, it comes with a CD screwdriver, cable, cheap leather like case, and foam to secure the drive from sliding around, and the case feels sturdy. so i'll try to return or osmething.
