iPod Touch 2G Water Damaged! Help!

Postby AW177 » July 28th, 2010, 1:31 am

Hey all,

I've had my iPod Touch 2G for about a year and 6 months and I had it in my pocket when I got a little wet. I didn't even know the iPod got wet, turned it on, it came on but then it just somehow fizzled out and I can't get it back on again. I push the power button, nothing; I tried to reset it by holding the power and home keys and still nothing. iTunes does not recognize it at all! Since I can't turn it on, I have no idea if it's the screen, the home key, etc; basically what I'm asking is, do you have any idea of what is wrong w/ my Touch and which part would I need to replace it with?

Also I would like to make sure all my data is erased from the device before I ship it anywhere - is there a way to do this even though I can't access it since I can't turn it on? Would putting it next to a magnet erase the data? Please advise, thank you!

With water damage, it's usually corrosion that causes most of the damage. We would have to get the unit in here and test it before we could tell you what is wrong or what it would take to fix it. Look here: http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/ipod-repair-services.html. As far as the data goes, if the unit is unable to boot on and sync to your PC, the information on the drive is unrecoverable without a professional data recovery service. In other words, the music and data on the iPod Touch is already gone. And we would NEVER recommend using a strong magnet with any MP3 player as it won't just erase the drive, it could permanently damage it. In this case, an iPod Touch has flash memory that would not be affected anyway. Hope this info helps, and the sooner you can get it to a repair shop like ours, the better luck we will have in fixing it for low cost. Thanks!

Hi Justin and thank you so much for the help, I really appreciate the quick response. I find it weird that the Touch would fizzle out w/ little water damage - I had a case on it and it was in my pants pocket. I did not get that wet, just splashed w/ some water - that was enough to cause corrosion? The strip in the headphones jack is red, meaning there is water damage but just find it odd that such little water can cause it to stop working.

I will check out your services and weigh my options. Thank you again!
