Microsoft includes the standard set of earphones, not the premium. Along with a sync cable and different foam ear covers.
The new Zune HD looks great, small and sleek (just a bit smaller than the iPod Touch). The button layout is about the same as the Touch with a button on the top left side for media navigation, power button on top, and the home button on the bottom center like the iPod Touch.
For this guide we chose the 32GB Platinum model. No 64GB available yet though.

Unit in hand:
This new form factor Zune HD is one of the coolest yet, maybe not the funnest Zune ever, but it looks and acts like an iPod Touch on steroids.
The Zune HD has a 3.3 inch OLED display which draws significantly less power than a traditional LCD screen with backlit LED's.
This screen is amazing to watch movies on. With 8.5 hours of video on a full charge!

Step 1
WARRANTY ALERT: Turn the Zune HD over and note the 4x Tri-wing screws. Kiss your warranty goodbye after opening. Even though there are no stickers warning you of this, you better not tell MS you took off the backing and tried to replace a screen or battery!
While Apple has a more hidden approach to traditional screws, Microsoft uses them in plain sight. Tri-Wing screws will deter some people, but not all.
Apparently there is a hidden message inside the back panel: "For Our Princess"
Rumor has it a MS team member may have passed during the dev stage in this new Zune.

Step 2
After the back panel has been removed you can see the board, and battery. There is one T-4 Screw that can be removed now with the T-4 Driver.
There are 2 more hidden T-4 screws, and 1 T-6 screw (T-6 Driver) that need to be removed. Take off the black serial plate by carefully peeling it from its two side clips. Don't force it off, after removal you can see the screws. |

|
|
Step 3
After all the screws have been removed, you can disconnect the three ribbon cables from the board.
The three cables are for:
Digitizer
OLED Screen
Home Button
Release the board from the frame and use a nylon spudger tool to unseat the battery. The board and battery should lift out easily.
|
 |
|
Step 4
Next remove the media button from the internal frame, this should lift out easily.
The tricky part to removing the frame from the front assembly is to make sure the clips on the side are released.
The glass digitizer marked:
Avago x82165-001 P81302 A07
RiTdisplay 3121813020-01
X820800-006
Make sure you keep your dirty prints off the OLED screen or you will regret it! It's quite hard to clean.

Completed:
This guide was fairly simple. The Zune HD is easy to open and repair.
Left:
Two larger chips are Toshiba NAND flash memory. The smaller silver chip with the EMI shield is an Atheros AR6002 responsible for Mobile Wi-Fi. This new chip is supposed to consume 70% less power than competitive solutions.
Right:
Center chip, NVIDIA Tegra APX2600-HM-A3 processor with a 600MHz core.
So many parts inside have similarities to the iPod Touch. The battery and headphone jacks share connection types like the Nano and Touch. The Zune HD has many repairable parts which is always good when you drop or break it! |
