What a pretty box
choice for the new Zune 2 80GB.
- Less bulk than the previous version
- Compact and friendly

Picture of the
unit which will set you back $247.88 for the 80 GB.
Crisp clear screen and easy to use controls
defines the new Zune 2. |

Prior to
disassembly you must remove the top plastic insert in order to access the 2
T-4 screws on the top of the unit.
The T-4 bit can be difficult to get a hold of. We should have this tool available shortly. |
| |
Now we can
concentrate on removing the anodized aluminum backing. Slide the safe open case
tool in the small gap between the front and back to free the back panel.
These clips are very difficult to remove, take your time and dont break anything! you may need some extra safe open case tools here. |
| |
After the backing
comes off we have a partial view of the internals.
Now we can remove the tape holding the drive, battery and other cables in place.
Remove the 2 screws holding the headphone jack in place now. Then lift the 80GB drive out carefully unclipping the HD cable 1st.
Lift the battery out and set it aside for now. |
| |
Take note of the grooves that hold the battery cables in place so we can put them back later.
We should now remove the second round of tape holding the wireless antennae assembly down. Be very careful not to cut this tape, there is a cable stuck to the bottom of it! |
| |
Notice the cable on the bottom of this picture. This is why you have to be careful when you take the tape off.
Remove the 4 T-4 screws so we can access the bottom of the logic board.
If you are replacing the battery, you will have to grab the soldering iron to get this OEM battery out. At least the pads are quite large so if you have zero experience, it will still remain easy! |
| |
Now that the screws have been removed, we can unclip the wireless cables.
Unplug the wireless antennae from the board using your fingers. This is the small black cable opposite of where the battery wires were tucked in on the side. Then lift the clip so you can remove the orange ribbon cable that was under the silver screw clip. See step 9 for complete removal of wireless.
Gently lift up the board to remove the LCD screen clip. Take the logic board and set it aside.
| |
Take a small exacto or flathead and gently peel the wireless assembly up from the plastic frame. Work your blade around the top until the cable comes free.
All thats left is removal of the LCD screen. If you plan on doing a DIY Zune 2 LCD screen repair, you have to tear the unit down completely. |
| |
The only thing left to do is remove the LCD screen. This screen is held in place by a few plastic clips on each side. Simply insert your flathead or exacto on the side of the screen to pop it up progressively. It should NOT be hard to do, don't force anything or you are doing it wrong! |
