The iPhone 4 from the back. Note the improved rear camera with LED flash.
5 Megapixel Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio.
The back panel is again flat like the iPhone 2G. 3G & 3GS back panels are curved and wabble on a flat surface.

Step 1
The iPhone 4 has two phillips screws on the bottom as did the iPhone 3G & 3GS.
Unlike previous models, the back panel is removed first to expose the internals of the iPhone 4. |
Step 2
Slide the back panel upwards to expose the internals. |
Once the back panel has been removed, there are several steps involving screws and clips.
The stainless steel case and bezel are a nice touch. Apple reduced the size of this new model substantially while improving antennae placement. |

Step 3
WARRANTY ALERT:
Once you get started, there's no turning back.
Holy screws! Take a look at the figure to the left. Red circles outline all of the screw locations available for now.
Set aside the vibrator.
In order to place the proper screws back later, print out the photo to the left, and set the screws on the location map. |
After all the screws have been set aside, remove the metal shim. Carefully detach the dock cable with a Nylon case open tool. |
Circled is a picture of the dock cable clip removed. |

Remove the circled battery clip shim to expose the antenna.
Remove the mega juiced battery by lifting the plastic tab upwards. Make sure you have removed the screw holding the battery board connection (bottom left of battery). Don't tear anything, go slow.
This new style battery is solderless, and very easy to replace like the 3G & 3GS.
Battery specs:
Li-ion Polymer Battery
3.7V 5.25 Whr
APN: 616-0513
VPN: LIS1445APPC
1420 mAh 7 hours of talk time on 3G or up to 14 hours on 2G. |
Step 4
Remove the dock speaker/wireless antennae module. |

Note the two liquid damage indicators, the bottom one has no screw underneath, the top one does. Remove that screw now. |
Once most of the screws have been removed, lift the board shim out and set it aside. |

Step 5
Note the new screw and clip locations. The six green circles fasten the LED backlit screen.
There are several clips to remove in this step: board cable, digitizer, screen, etc.

Remove the rear facing camera, one clip holds it in place. What an improvment from older models. 5MP camera that shoots 720P video with audio at 30 FPS.

Step 6
After all the clips and screws have been removed, the board lifts easily out.
Removing the shielding is not recommended. We simply did this to identify the chips on board.
Largest chip in red is the Samsung K9PFG08 flash memory module
Directly left of the flash memory is the Cirrus Logic 338S0589 audio codec with Apple stamp.
Digitizer touchscreen controller boxed in yellow.

After all the clips have been removed there are some trivial steps involved in getting the Digitizer/Screen combo out of the front.
Six larger screws with washers hold the screen module in place, remove them and carefully slip the screen cables through the hole in the bezel.
iPhone 4 has a Screen/Digitizer combo. Similar to the 1st iPhone, iPhone 4's display module is one piece. We have to confirm this, but it may be possible to replace the digitizer and screen separately. |

Prior to removal of the LED backlit screen, there are several smaller components you may wish to remove.
We won't go into detail on removal of the headphone jack or volume buttons. They are very easy to remove.
View the sleek new midframe bezel, it houses several components responsible for GPS, wireless, bluetooth, and more.
The home button slides out through the front. Make sure the clip on the backside is lifted prior.
The front facing camera is tiny! A metal plate with clips holds this in place.
Also pictured is the dock port and mic combo.

Completed
After a long wait, the iPhone 4 is finally torn apart. Many of the parts inside are replaced with little effort. |
